Ashton-Sandy Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The CDP is designated to include the two unincorporated communities of Ashton and Sandy Spring.

Geography

Ashton-Sandy Spring is located at coor dms|39|8|54|N|76|59|55|W|city (39.148270, -76.998599)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 7.6 square miles (19.7 km²), of which, 7.6 square miles (19.6 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.26%) is water.

Demographics

As of censusGR|2 2000, there were 3,437 people, 1,246 households, and 914 families residing in the area. The population density was 454.1 people per square mile (175.3/km²). There were 1,282 housing units at an average density of 169.4/sq mi (65.4/km²). The racial makeup of the area was 81.00% White, 12.28% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.43% Asian, 1.25% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.52% of the population.

There were 1,246 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the area the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.

The median household income in the area was $73,458, and the median income for a family was $87,335. Males had a median income of $69,375 versus $43,929 for females. The per capita income for the area was $36,833. About 1.8% of families and 4.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over.
