Sports in the San Francisco Bay Area

The San Francisco Bay Area currently hosts nine major league sports franchises. The city and county of San Francisco is home to MLB's San Francisco Giants, the San Francisco Dragons of Major League Lacrosse, and the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. The city of San Jose is home to the San Jose Sharks of the NHL, the San Jose Stealth of the National Lacrosse League, and the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. The San Jose Earthquakes returned to Major League Soccer in 2008 after a two-season absence. The new incarnation of the Earthquakes, which inherited the original Earthquakes' history despite having no direct relation to that team, currently play in Santa Clara. The city of Oakland is home to the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, MLB's Oakland Athletics and the Oakland Raiders of the NFL.

The Bay Area is also well-represented in college sports. Three universities whose football programs compete in the highest tier of NCAA competition, Division I FBS, are located in the area:
*California, in Berkeley
*San José State, in San Jose
*Stanford, in Stanford, on the San Francisco Peninsula adjacent to Palo Alto

The area also boasts three other schools that do not sponsor football, but also have NCAA Division I athletic programs:
*Saint Mary's, in Moraga in Contra Costa County
*San Francisco
*Santa Clara, in the city of the same name
