Geography
Deep River is located at 41°34′49″N 92°22′27″W / 41.58028°N 92.37417°W (41.580395, -92.374249)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.
Origin of name
The Deep River flows nearby; it is a minor tributary of the English River. The town and its namesake river were named not for the depth of the water in the Deep River, but for the depth of the ravine through which it flows. At some places the banks are 20 ft above the crick.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 288 people, 120 households, and 80 families residing in the city. The population density was 681.1 people per square mile (264.8/km²). There were 135 housing units at an average density of 319.3 per square mile (124.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.04% of the population.
There were 120 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.98.
Age/Gender Breakdown: 27.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,438, and the median income for a family was $46,875. Males had a median income of $29,643 versus $17,639 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,437. About 4.9% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under the age of eighteen and 10.0% of those sixty five or over.
