Columbus City is a city in Louisa County, Iowa, United States. The population was 376 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Columbus City is located at 41°15′30″N 91°22′33″W / 41.25833°N 91.37583°W / 41.25833; -91.37583 (41.258225, -91.375711)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 376 people, 135 households, and 91 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,613.4 people per square mile (631.2/km²). There were 138 housing units at an average density of 592.1 per square mile (231.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 74.47% White, 0.27% Asian, 22.87% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.24% of the population.

There were 135 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.49.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,188, and the median income for a family was $39,167. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $22,232 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,468. About 7.3% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
