Nitroamine

Nitroamine
Structure of the nitroamino group

Nitroamines are organic compounds that contain the nitroamino functional group, R2N-NO2.[citation needed] The R's are the continuation of the ring structure, see RDX. Examples of nitroamines are the explosives HMX, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane and tetryl.[citation needed] Nitroamines are not to be confused with nitrosamines (with an 's').

Despite their amine group they are not basic due to the electron withdrawing effect of the nitro functional group. Secondary nitroamines of the structure R-NH-NO2 are actually weak organic acids with a pKa of around 5.6.[citation needed]
