Cloverdale is a town in Cloverdale and Warren townships, Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,172 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Cloverdale is located at 39°30′55″N 86°48′9″W / 39.51528°N 86.8025°W / 39.51528; -86.8025 (39.515345, -86.802559)^[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) of it (1.97%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 2,243 people, 901 households, and 613 families residing in the town. The population density was 644.3 people per square mile (248.9/km²). There were 960 housing units at an average density of 275.8 per square mile (106.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.28% White, 0.45% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population.

There were 901 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,402, and the median income for a family was $42,917. Males had a median income of $33,561 versus $20,857 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,982. About 4.0% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.4% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.

Cloverdale is served by locally owned and based Endeavor Communications, formerly Clay County Rural Telephone Cooperative, which serves over 10,000 members.^[4]

Famous residents

Andrew, Jeremy, and Tabitha Leonard, siblings, along with their mother and stepfather, Janice and James Weimer, died on ValuJet Flight 592 which crashed in the Florida Everglades on May 11, 1996, after taking off from Miami, FL en route to Atlanta. They were returning home from a cruise through the Caribbean. None of the 110 people on board the plane survived.
