The population was 230 at the 2000 census.
The name sources from the mill works at Potlatch who would stop at the bars after work. When a wife called and asked where her husband was she would be told he was "Onaway" home.[citation needed]
Geography
Onaway is located at 46°55′43″N 116°53′21″W / 46.92861°N 116.88917°W (46.928565, -116.889074).[1]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 230 people, 83 households, and 63 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,546.4 people per square mile (592.0/km²). There were 86 housing units at an average density of 578.2 per square mile (221.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.78% White, 0.43% Native American, 0.43% Asian, and 4.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.48% of the population.
There were 83 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.1% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $39,821, and the median income for a family was $44,464. Males had a median income of $35,357 versus $23,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,211. About 6.0% of families and 9.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.8% of those under the age of eighteen and 29.4% of those sixty five or over.
