The precise capabilities and specifications of the missile are unknown, but with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers, the whole of Japan is within range of a North Korean launch. It is thought to weigh over 25 tons and have a one-ton warhead.
The Rodong-2 is believed to be based on the Rodong-1, with its increased range achieved by producing the main booster structure from an aluminium-magnesium alloy rather than the heavier steel used in previous North Korean systems. The range increase could also be brought about by reducing the weight of the payload.
On July 5, 2006, North Korea test-launched at least two medium-range Rodong-2 missiles and one long-range Taepodong-2 missile.
