History

In 1949, the south shore of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida became its own town, called Indian Rocks Beach South Shore. The town continued to go by that name until July 24, 1973 when the name was changed to Indian Shores. Members of Council at this historic occasion were Mayor Lambertus Seynders, Vice Mayor Howard E. Mann, James A. Roesler, William J. Coppenhaver, Ruth E. Paulson, Gordon E. Hall, Rollin R. Savage, Samuel L. Clark and Robert M. Quin, Council Members.

A notable tourist attraction of Indian Shores was Tiki Gardens, a South Seas island paradise imitation which housed exotic birds, Polynesian statues, and tropical flowers. The theme park closed down in the 80's and was bought up by a developer hoping to turn the large lot into a high quality hotel. The town purchased the lot back from the developer and it instead became a parking lot for public beach access.

The Town of Indian Shores today has a Town Square Nature Park, which features long boardwalks through the mangroves for a truly unique Indian Shores experience. The town hall of Indian Shores has a small library which is only open two days a week, but is open to all Indian Shores residents. The Indian Shores library is known to carry more new release books than even the Tampa Public Library System.
