Haldia Institute of Technology (HIT) is located at Haldia, West Bengal, India. It is a semi-autonomous engineering college. The college was founded in 1996, with 90 students and three departments, by ICARE. The college started initially within the Haldia Municipality building. Since its inception it has become one of the fastest-growing engineering colleges, in terms of departments and infrastructure.fact|date=August 2008 It is a residential engineering college, having facilities on site including a bank, post office, medical unit, central library, restaurants, play grounds, gymnasium, etc.

Research

The faculty members of the Chemical Engineering Department are engaged in various research projects. A complete Research and Development Centre will be in operation very soon, helping to enhance the research work of the Institute. Currently, one faculty member and his research group have developed a fuel cell, which was mentioned in "Fuel Cell Today". Mr. Biswajit Mandal and his students developed a proton exchange membrane fuel cell at HIT. Currently he and his group are involved in various projects including microbial fuel cells and solar hydrogen production.
