History

PUP San Pedro Campus was established on April 9, 2002 as a open university center by virtue of a memorandum of agreement signed by then San Pedro, Laguna mayor Felicismo A. Vierneza and former PUP president Dr. Ofelia M. carague, PUP San Pedro initially offered a single curricular program-Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Management. Two sections totaling 119 students enrolled in the courses were housed in a borrowed two room building at the San Pedro ManPower Center at the Elvinda Subdivision. Chairs some 120 of them were donated by Laguna governor Teresita Lazaro and a few other amenties were supplied by the local government.

Dark clouds are gone and a bright light has finally shone upon PUP San Pedro, Students can now have a sight of relief knowing that dear PUP is here to stay. The revised memorandum of agreement was finally signed by PUP president Dr. Dante Guevarra and the honorable mayor of the municipality Calixto R. Cataquiz. Witnesses at the signing on May 14, 2008 at the conference hall of the Office of the Mayor where the executive director for branches and extensions prof. Randy Alcantara, PUP SP director Angelito Roldan, PUP SP former registrar Susan Roldan, municipal administrator Fil Sibulo, councilors Raffy Campos, and Bobot Berroya.

Valid and binging upon the parties for 12 uears, the MOA provides that the Municipality, most willing to invest and continue the existence of the university, among other things, shall initiate the offering of and provide the necessary funds for the degree programs mutually agreed by the contracting parties; provide and maintain the location of PUP San Pedro as well as the building, facilities, laboratory rooms and equipment; collect tuition fee and special assessment from the students and deposit the collection in a Special Fund duly created for the operation and maintenance of the extension; provide PUP San Pedro with support staff; and shoulder the salaries, bonuses, incentives and other monetary benefits as provided by law to faculty members.

The University, on the other hand, shall offer in the municipality the academic programs relevant to the needs of the community; undertake the recruitment and hiring of qualified faculty and students in conformity with the policies of the university; colect miscellaneous fees from the students and deposit the collection in a special fund for the exclusive use of the Extension; grant the diploma or certificate the students who have suzessfully completed all the requirements for graduation.

Meanwhile, as instructed by the Mayor, PUP San Pedro relocated to its new home in United Bayanihan at the former campus of the San Pedro Relocation Center National High School which the principal Dr. Victorino Medrano, officially turned over of the mayor last May 16. The official turnover was witnessed by Executive Director Randy Alcantara, the director, former registrar prof. Susan Roldan and registrar prof. John Paul Domingo.

Tow weeks of massive cean up, repair and rehabilitation was somehow enough to prepare the campus for the opening of classes on June 10. With the able assistance of student leaders and the other concerned students as well as the employees, a semblance of order replaced the chaotic conditions of the old high school campus. Immediately the canteen was and made ready to serve the students. Classrooms andd offices were rewired, installed with lights and electric fans. One week into the opening of classes two rooms were installed iron grill and converted into air conditioned IT laboratories equipped with brand new computer sates and a spacious library cum audio-visual center adequately provided with chairs, tables and electric fans opened its doors to students hungry for knowledge.

Perhaps a plus factor, in spite of initial shock that greeted the PUPians, was the covered court - a prozed find for young sports enthusiasts. While classes shurn on smoothly, laughter and cheeres reverberate in the covered court as students smash shuttle cocks and drive the pingpong ball with new found relish.

Much has yet to be done but PUPians are relentless and undaunted. Soon they will settle down and gradually turn the erstwhile negelcted campus into a home of their own. Today, however, PUP San Pedro has gone full circle. A permanent home has hopefully been found for the "Iskolars ng Bayan".[1]
