This species was first described as "Pimelodus barbancho"; however, this is considered a "
nomen oblitum ". It was then described as "Pimelodus pirinampu" in 1829. In 1858, thegenus "Pinirampus " was described for this species, in which it is usually classified as the only species.cite journal|url=http://silurus.acnatsci.org/ACSI/library/biblios/2007_Ferraris_Catfish_Checklist.pdf|title=Checklist of catfishes, recent and fossil (Osteichthyes: Siluriformes), and catalogue of siluriform primary types|first=Carl J., Jr.|last=Ferraris|journal=Zootaxa |volume=1418|pages=1 – 628|year=2007|format=PDF ] However, "P. argentinus" has been considered a part of this genus. Brazil .cite journal|url=http://ecologia.icb.ufmg.br/~joseneto/Acta_Limnologica/PDF16(3)/Art8_16(3).pdf|title=Biological and ecological aspects of "Pinirampus pirinampu" (Spix, 1829), Siluriformes, Pimelodidae, in Capivara reservoir, Paranapanema River, Southern Brazil|last=Dias|first=J.H.|coauthors=Britto, S.G.C.; Vianna, N.C.; Garavello, J.C.|journal=Acta Limnol. Bras.|volume=16|issue=3|pages=293–304|year=2004|format=PDF ] This species is found in the Amazon, Essequibo, Orinoco, and Paraná basins.Description
"P. pirinampu" may reach a length of 60–75
centimetre s (24–30 in) and an average weight of 3–5kilogram s (6.6–11 lb). This species has a maximum published weight of 7,680 kg (16,930 lb). These fish reachsexual maturity at just under 60 cm (24 in) in length.Ecology
"P. pirinampu" occurs in schools. These catfish feed on benthic animals; they are nonspecialist feeders preying upon fish such as "
Iheringichthys labrosus " andpiranha "Serrasalmus sp.". In the Amazon basin, these fish are preyed upon by "Zungaro zungaro ". These fish are known from temperatures ranging from 24 to 29 °C (75 to 84 °F),pH range of 5 to 9, and analkalinity range of 42 to 142 mEq/L."P. pirinampu" is a species of migratory catfish. These fish gather in schools in the
dry season to swim upstream to the headwaters, where they spawn at the onset of therainy season in February. After spawning, the adults and juveniles drift downstream, reaching flooded areas orreservoir s used as foraging, growth sites and shelter againstpredation .cite journal|url=http://www.scielo.br/pdf/bjb/v66n1b/a14v661b.pdf|title=First gonadal maturation of "Pinirampus pirinampu" (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil|last=Peixer|first=J.|coauthors=Mateus, L.
