The village of Derveni is surrounded with three mountain ranges, a taller one is south of the village.

The village is covered with forests while not far from the village is mainly rocky and bushy. A few farmlands dominates within the village.

In 1940 the old name Dervenia (Greek: Δερβένια) replaced by Derveni in which dropped its letter.

The worst scenario that the village ever saw was the country's worst fire that broke the 1950s level and burnt around 80% of the region, its forests and bushes are burnt they have been reduced to ashes and burnt ash that only branches remain, it may take years to recover the natural beauty. The fire started on Friday August 24, 2007 during the afternoon hours and spread near the village during the night time hours and spread into the nearby villages of Soulos and Chirades. The fire was caused by an arson that exploded a can and a bottle of oil and gasoline and quickly spread the fire to southwestern Arcadia in days. It took tens of firefighters along with local residents as well as fire trucks, five choppers and about five airplanes to battle the blaze and lasted for days and sprayed out the fire outside the areas as the fires expanded over the windy 42°C weather that dominated southeastern Europe, winds blew at 75 to 80 km/h and expanded by about 500 m an hour, several fires were towering but a few were reported. A few buildings were destroyed and are expected to rebuilt.
