Nala Sopara (Marathi: नालासोपारा) (officially, Nala Sopara) is one of the suburbs of THANE DISTRICT . It is a small vilage within the THANE Conurbation. The town lies in Thane district of Maharashtra state in India. The population of the city is 184,664 (2001 census). It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Railway (India) railway line. It is governed by the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation.

[Road]==History== Nalasopara was historically a part of the Silk Road. It was known as Suppara according to the account of Ptolemy's Geographia.

Demographics

As of 2001^[update] India census,^[1] Nala Sopara had a population of 1,84,664 and it is one of the well known suburb in Mumbai. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Nala Sopara has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 82%. In Nala Sopara, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. This place has witnessed very steep rise of population since 1998, due to cheapest property rates in Mumbai suburban railways area, steep rise of property rates in Mumbai and being well connected to Mumbai city by local train services.

Localities

Nalasopara has some of the historic location located in Vasai Taluka like one of the Buddhist stupa known to be built in the reign of Emperor Ashoka. This city was once an ancient port named Sopara or Surparaka It also has some temples located within it which are not only historical but also a part of ancient architecture with beautiful monuments carved in it.

The Nalasopara (West) area consist of Desai Wadi, Bazar Peth, Sopara, Umrale, Nala, Gaas, Nirmal, Wagholi, Sri Prastha, Laxmiben Chedda Nagar, etc.

The localities in Nallasopara (East) are Achole Road, Achole Village, Don Lane, Tulinj, Vijay Nagar, Taki Road, Ostwal Nagari, Central Park, Sanyukta Nagar, Moregaon, Santosh Bhavan, Hawai Pada, Nagindaspada, etc. The Achole talao is a place worth visiting with soft music, lights, benches.

Administration

Nalasopara municipal council (Nagar Parishad) has been combined with the Virar and Vasai Municipal Council (Nagar Parishad) to make it a Municipal corporation for better administration and amenities, though there were protests from people in the rural areas not to include the adjoining villages. It is now adminsitered by now what is called the Vasai Virar Municipal corporation. (Mahanagarpalika)
