Delaware Route 286 Route information Maintained by DelDOT Length: 1.73 mi[1] (2.78 km) Existed: by 1994 – present Major junctions West end: MD 286 near Chesapeake City, MD East end: DE 15 near Summit Highway system ← DE 273 I-295 → Delaware Route 286, also known as Bethel Church Road, is a short, 1.73-mile (2.78 km) two-lane roadway that, along with Maryland Route 286 and Delaware Route 15, forms a link between Chesapeake City, Maryland and Summit, Delaware. Although primarily a rural route, DE Rt. 286 has seen an influx of residential developments due to the impacts of both the widening of U.S. Route 301/Delaware Route 896 and the completion of the Delaware Route 1 Turnpike. DE Rt. 286 is one of several routes in Delaware that does not fit into the State Highway System (based on that of the U.S. Highway System), as DE Rt. 286 is a much newer designation, using the same route number as MD Rt. 286.

Route description
DE 286 begins at the Maryland border, where Maryland Route 286 continues west to Chesapeake City, Maryland. From the state line, the route heads east on two-lane undivided Bethel Church Road, passing through areas of farms. A short distance later, the road runs between residential developments. The road then passes between homes to the north and farm fields to the south before becoming lined with farms on both sides. DE 286 reaches its eastern terminus at Delaware Route 15, which heads south on Choptank Road and east on Bethel Church Road.[2]
History
By 1920 what is now DE 286 existed as an unimproved county road.[3][4] The road was paved by 1936 and served as part of the route between Summit Bridge and Chesapeake City, Maryland.[5] It became a part of Road 433 by 1988 when DelDOT assigned maintenance numbers to its roads.[6] DE 286 was designated onto its current alignment by 1994, serving as a continuation of MD 286.[7]
Major intersections
The entire route is in New Castle County.
