As of April 2009, the federal government allocated RM200 million for a new airport in Mukah. This new airport will replace the old one as it is only capable of handling helicopters, light aircraft and can barely cope with the newer ATR 72 turboprop aircraft of Malaysia Airlines' subsidiary, MASWings. Rumor has it that the new airport would be capable of handling jet aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320 series.
