History

The school was first conceived by the 1954 Congressional Committee of the Philippines, who saw in it an opportunity help create a sense of national identity.[3] The university was founded on 1 September 1961 and opened in 1962 with 282 students and 12 faculty members on a single campus in Marawi City. The university expanded from that base to include seven individual campuses in Buug, General Santos, Iligan, LNAC, LNCAT, Maguindanao and Naawan, housing a total of more than 53,000 students in 2011. That same year, there were over 3,000 faculty members.
