Naawan Integrated Laboratory Science High School
The
MSU Naawan Integrated Laboratory Science High School is the academic arm of the Naawan Campus in charge of secondary education. In 2004 the school renamed from MSU-Naawan Fisheries High School but formerly known as Naawan High Junior School. The School enjoys the strong support of the itsParent-Teachers Association . Among their effort the NFHS PTA donated laboratory equipment for the Science Laboratories.History
The Campus started as a field laboratory of the MSU College of Fisheries. The first batch of BS Fisheries students helped clear the area for a laboratory, and developed the fishponds which they stocked with brackishwater fish species.
In 1964, the laboratory was mere a nipa hut which housed wooden fish tanks. Previously known in the MSU (Marawi) campus as MFRL, or the MSU College of Fisheries Marine Fisheries Research Laboratory, it was where the life cycle of
sugpo (Penaeus monodon, Fabricius) was studied, completed and documented with funds from theNational Science Development Board (NSDB). The breakthrough solved the problem of sugpo fry shortage and paved the way for the mass production of sugpo using more intensive stocking densities. This development also led to the establishment of the SouthEast Asian Fisheries Development Center in Iloilo which continues to study sugpo to date.On
December 4 ,1973 , MFRL became the Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (IFRD), and maintained only to do research and extension projects. The academic arm which is the present School of Marine Fisheries and Technology (SMFT) started as an extension of the MSU College of Fisheries in Naawan just as the MSU Naawan Fisheries High School was also considered as MSU Marawi External Affairs unit.In the 1970s, MFRL was under the Dean of
MSU CF in the person of Dean D.K. Villaluz. As IFRD, it was under a Director in the person of Prof. Warlito M. Sanguila. The nomenclature was later changed to Director General. For twelve years, it was under the dynamic leadership of Dr. William R. Adan who served both as Executive Director of IFRD and later, as the first Chancellor of the now MSU at Naawan (1986 - 1998). He was followed briefly by the late Dr. Ali G. Macawaris. The Campus is at present under the able leadership of Dr. Marcelino I. Tumanda Jr.Development of Aquaculture
Development of
aquaculture conceived at MSU-Naawan which has helps contribute face of marine ecology that elevated the Philippines' status as an export-producing sector of the Philippine economy. For it was in this campus where the"blue-revolution" was first conceived. The artificial breeding techniques developed in the IFRD hatcheries allowed for the mass production of some fish species in a scale that helped closed the demand for fish in the world market.Today
Today, since the founding of the MSU College of Fisheries and as a distinct unit of the MSU System, MSU Naawan holds the distinction as one of the campus that has gained both national and international prominence in fisheries research. The Campus counts the prestigious
Earth Day Award from DENR and the Centennial Fisheries Award from DOST and the numerous awards received by its researchers as indicators of the level of excellence it has attained over the years of existence. At present, it caters to the research needs of Region 10, 12, and 13 in the fields of fisheries. It enjoys the support of other government agencies in the implementation of its programs and projects.ee also
