The territory of Zágráb county, like the rest of Croatia, became part of the
Kingdom of Hungary in the 12th century, and within it part of theHabsburg Monarchy in 1526. Zágráb county was re-established after it was liberated from Ottoman occupation in the early 18th century. In 1918 (confirmed by theTreaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formedKingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent fromYugoslavia , the county is part of the Republic ofCroatia .Demographics
