Denise Laferrière

Denise Laferrière (born on October 25, 1950, in Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, Quebec) [1] is a Quebec politician in Gatineau, Quebec. She is the councillor for Hull District.

Laferrière studied at McGill University and obtained a bachelor's degree in English drama before moving to Gatineau. She was later the president of the Commission Scolaire Outaouais-Hull (CSOH) which later changed to Commission Scolaire des Portages-de-l'Outaouais after a merger with the former Aylmer school board in 1998. She also worked at the CLSC and the Regie Regional de Sante et Services Sociaux (RRSSS), a health agency responsible for the management of the health system and hospital across the Outaouais region.

She entered municipal politics in 2001 when the former city of Hull was amalgamated to become the new City of Gatineau. In the elections, she narrowly defeated the current director of the Commission Scolaire des Portages-de-l'Outaouais school board, Jocelyn Blondin. She easily won the 2005 election for a second term and named to the Executive Committee by elected-mayor Marc Bureau. She is also a member of the Conseil regional de l'environnement et du developpement durable de l'Outaouais (CREDDO), a regional committee promoting environmental protection and sustainable development in the region. She is also a member of a women's advocate group called Options-Femme Emploi which is responsible to help local women looking for jobs.

Laferrière planned to revitalize to the downtown sector in order to reduce crime rate and illegal activity such as prostitution and drug-trading. She also promoted sustainable development and a housing strategy. During her first mandate, several areas including Boulevard Saint-Laurent (now called Boulevard des Allumettières) and Boulevard Maisonneuve were revitalized and newer housing projects have developed over the past years replacing older homes in poor condition.

Laferrière is married and has three children.
