1993 , in a Challenger in his hometown ofBelo Horizonte , where he lost in the first round at the age of 16. In1997 , he started travelling aroundSouth America , reaching his first Challenger Semifinal inQuito , losing toMariano Puerta . In August, he reached his first final, again in his hometown, losing to BrazilianRoberto Jabali . He also reached the semifinal in Guadalajara,Mexico .
