  • Ted Kennedy - incumbent U.S. Senator elected in 1962 and reelected in 1964, 1970, 1976, and 1982. He also ran for president in 1980.

Republican

  • Joseph D. Malone- Subsequently elected to State Treasurer in 1990 and reelected in 1994. Later ran an abortive campaign for Governor in 1998.
