Layout
The bus station is set on a large and open forecourt with 31 bays for buses to stop at, making it the 2nd largest bus station in Wales after Cardiff Central but ahead of Swansea bus station. With the present configuration the buses park facing the bay on arrival and reverse out on departure. The pedestrian area is completely undercover, although not strictly 'inside' as with other bus stations (such as Bristol).

Services
Newport is the terminus for most bus services coming in from Torfaen, Caerphilly and Monmouthshire, as well as services from in and around the city. As well as giving the valleys of southeast Wales access to the city, the bus station also has services that run to Cardiff and Bristol. National Express services run from bays 1 to 3 to destinations throughout the UK.
Redevelopment
The bus station and surrounding area is part of the Friars Walk and Newport Unlimited development scheme and will see a large regeneration by 2009. The bus station, which has suffered criticism due to prominent night-time vandalism from local residents, will be completely rebuilt and self-contained. The new mall will occupy half the existing station, so a secondary bus station will be built adjacent to Newport railway station.[citation needed]
