Albertus Magnus High School

Albertus Magnus High School

Albertus Magnus High School is a Catholic, co-educational high school located in Bardonia, New York, named after the German philosopher and theologian of the same name. It is the only Catholic high school in Rockland County, New York.

The school

The school describes itself as a "Catholic, co-educational community of faith in which our future leaders strive for academic excellence, seek truth and show respect for the dignity of each person." Albertus Magnus High School is run by the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary Sparkill, New York, which was founded on May 6, 1876 in New York City by Mother Catherine Mary Antoninus Thorpe. Albertus Mangnus High School is one of many schools and missions in New York State, Missouri, Maryland, Montana, Pakistan, and Peru run by that order.

History

In the early 1950s, Cardinal Spellman requested that the Dominican Sisters create a Catholic High School in Rockland County. In July of 1957 the property was purchased, and the construction of Albertus Magnus High School began and was completed within three years.

One major component that Albertus Magnus feels help a student prepare for college is to become involved. Their motto is "Don't be an eight to two-er". Extracurricular activities are strongly encouraged. Among the sports and other activities offered by the school include soccer, volleyball, cross country, winter & spring track, football, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, golf, and lacrosse. Other extracurricular activities include cheerleading, mock trial, honor societies, art, choir, computer, drama, literary magazine, International Club, Albertus Ambassadors, Campus Ministry, Midnight Run, Eucharistic Ministers, pro-life, peer counseling, Student Council, Reality Check, Ski/Snowboard Club and Photography Club, and the school's newspaper, "Magnus Monitor".

Evaluation

In April 2005, the school was evaluated by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. The Middle States Validation Team cited the school for its academics, the dedication of its staff and its strong rapport with the students, and the health of its student environment. This was clearly seen in the class of 2007.
