Geography

Veľký Meder lies in the eastern part of Great Rye Island, on the western border of historical Komárom County, around 20 km south-east of Dunajská Streda and 35 km north-west of Komárno. Administratively, the town belongs to the Trnava Region, Dunajská Streda District.

Spa

The spa can be a little tricky to find, but once you get there, there's no missing it: the entrance, indoor pools and newer buildings are in a curious, brightly-coloured pseudo-Turkish style. The 9-hectare resort, partly on forest land, was originally built in 1974 and has been undergoing a process of rolling renovation since 2004. The water here comes out of the ground at 57 degrees Celsius but is cooled to the mid-30s before being fed into a bewildering array of indoor and outdoor pools. These are mostly of the waist-deep, wallow-at-your-leisure variety.

There is also a full-size conventional swimming pool and two water slides (with more planned), and the complex is filled with food outlets and surrounded by hotels and pensions of varying standards. It seems tremendously popular in summer, with people sprawled out on every spare scrap of lawn. This may be partly explained by its relatively low prices, at least compared to the newer thermal resorts elsewhere in Slovakia.

History

The first written record about Veľký Meder was in 1248 under name Villa Meger. Meder (Megyer) is the name of the ancient Hungarian Megyer tribe.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2001 census, the most dominant group in the town are the Hungarians (84.6%), next are the Slovaks (13.5%), and there are small minorities of Czechs and Roma/Gypsies (both 0.7%).[1]
