- Districts of Belfast
Belfast is the capital city ofNorthern Ireland . The districts of Belfast reflect the still-divided nature of Northern Ireland as a whole. Areas tend to be highly segregated, especially in working-class neighbourhoods. Much of what is now known asGreater Belfast existed as separate towns and villages before the city's expansion. Including the City Centre, the city can be divided into five areas withnorth Belfast ,east Belfast ,south Belfast , andwest Belfast . Each of these is also a parliamentary constituency. Belfast remains segregated by walls (known as “peace lines ”) erected by theBelfast City Centre is divided by two postcodes, "BT1" for the area lying north of the City Hall, and "BT2" for the area to its south. The industrial estate and docklands share "BT3". The rest of the Greater Belfast postcodes are set out in aclockwise system. Although "BT" stands for "Belfast", it is used across the whole of Northern Ireland.
