Seminole County Fire Department

Seminole County Fire Department was founded in 1974 and currently has 19 stations throughout the unincoporated areas of Seminole County, Florida and the cities of Altamonte Springs and Winter Springs. Three more stations are currently being planned or under construction.Fact|date=April 2008 The fire chief is Leeanna Raw.

History

*10/1/1974 - Begins operations

*1977 - Seminole County and Altamonte Springs begins a First Response system (this was expanded to eventually cover all municipal fire departments within the county)

*1980 - Special Hazards and Operations Team (S.H.O.T.) is established with the creation of Squad 2.

*1986 - Enhanced 911 is launched

*4/1/1988 - Seminole County Fire switches from VHF radio frequencies to a ten channel 800 MHz Motorola Type I trunked radio system (Today that system is an 18 channel Motorola Type II trunked radio system that all public safety and most public works agencies in the county use)

*7/1/1997 - EMS transport program begins countywide

*4/1/1999 - Launches "Air Rescue 3" multi-mission helicopter with SCSO (capabilties include EMS transport, BAMBI bucket fire suppression, and some law enforcement functions)

*10/1/2002 - Altamonte Springs Fire Department is absorbed into Seminole County Fire Department. Oviedo F/R is the last municipal fire department to join the First Response program, which they did on this date.

*11/2/2002 - Seminole County FD changes it's apparatus color scheme from orange/white and black letters (some units were still using the 1980's era safety green with dark green letters) to red/white and black/gold letters and stripes

*2003 - S.H.O.T. Team expands with three engine companies (Engines 12, 27, and 35) in addition to Squad 2

*10/2/2008 - Winter Springs FD merges with SCFD

*52 - Hangar (helicopter hangar at Orlando/Sanford International Airport jointly run with Seminole County Sheriff's Office) - Alert 1, Alert 2 (both SCSO)
*65 - UCF/Remington Park (jointly run with Orange County Fire/Rescue) - Engine 65 (Orange County F/R), Rescue 65

*Note: SCFD formerly operated the Air Rescue 3 medical/firefighting helicopter with SCSO from Station 52, but due to helicopter condition and to save money SCFD decided to no longer operate a helicopter and funding towards the helicopter went to SCSO for them to purchase a new helicopter. Primary air medical transport to the county is now provided by Orlando Health's Air Care 3 based at South Seminole Hospital in Longwood.
