- List of districts of India
A district is an administrative division of a state in India. India is divided into twenty-eight states and seven Union territories (UT). Each state or UT is subdivided into districts for administration purposes. As of 2008 India has 610 districts. [statoids|id=yin|title=Districts of India] The power to change district borders, create new districts or merge existing districts lies with respective state government. The term district as a divisional administration was first mentioned in the "Scheduled District Act, 1874".
