Iwata (磐田郡; -gun) was a district located in Shizuoka,
Japan .As of
2003 , the district had an estimatedpopulation of 109,260 and a density of 171.17 persons per km². The total area before the dissolution was 638.31 km².On July 1, 2005, The municipalities of Misakubo, Sakuma, and Tatsuyama were merged into the city of Hamamatsu and the district dissolved.

October 1 ,1956 -The village of Asaba gained town status.
*September 1 ,1957 -The village of Oho was divided and merged into the city of Iwata and the town of Toyoda.
*November 3 ,1958 -
** The town of Fukuroi gained city status.
** The town of Ninomata gained city status and renamed to the city of Tenryū.
*January 1 ,1973 -The village of Toyoda gained town status.
*April 1 ,2005 -
** The town of Asaba merged with the city of Fukuroi to form the new city of Fukuroi.
** The municipalities of Fukude, Ryuyo, Toyoda, and Toyoka merged with the city of Iwata to form the new city of Iwata.
*July 1 ,2005 -The remaining three municipalities merged into the city of Hamamatsu and the district was dissolved as a result of this merger.
