See-through clothing is any garment of clothing made with lace, mesh or sheer material that allows the wearer's body or undergarment – if any – to be seen through its fabric.[1] Though potentially regarded as controversial, see-through materials have been featured heavily on high-fashion runways since 2006. This use of see-through fabrics as a common element designer clothing resulted in the 'sheer fashion trend' that has been predominant in fashion circles since 2008.[2] See-through fabric is sometimes called nude netting.[3]

Before the 1980s, see-through clothing was a taboo even in the most socialized celebrity and fashion forums. The trend changed in late 1980s by the manipulation of television soap series "Dynasty" and "Dallas." Celebs like Brooke Shields and Cindy Crawford were the major contributors in this regard but Demi Moore was the basic source of inspiration for the popularity of see through clothing. Her movie “Striptease” caused a huge buzz in the fashion and fame industry. Her see through lingerie was and still is considered as one of the best on-screen see through appearances of all times. However, in late 1990s, this trend just vanished as it was never in. Stars, models and socialites were attracted in more in silk and leather tendencies rather than see-through. Rare spots were always in trace on celebrities but there was no major see-through trend in the fashion industry overall.

It took the trend almost a decade to be reverted and celebrities sought to be photographed in see-through and filmy clothing. Angelina Jolie, Lindsay Lohan and Lady Gaga were the top contributors in the revival of see-through Christian Dior dresses. Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra Ambrosio were the top models in promoting see-through fashions.[4] Many celebrities and models have now followed the fashion. A see-through dress worn by Catherine Middleton to a charity fashion show in 2002 was sold at auction on 17 March 2011 for $127,500.[5]

Mesh, web or net fabric may have many connected or woven pieces with a large number of closely spaced holes, frequently used for modern sports jerseys.

A sheer fabric is one which is semi-transparent and flimsy cloth. It is usually a very thin knit and is used to make tights and stockings. It is also used for effect in dancewear and lingerie. It can also be used in tops, pants, skirts, dresses and gowns.

Latex rubber, which is naturally translucent, or plastics can be made into clothing material of any level of transparency. Clear plastic is typically only found in over-garments, such as raincoats. The use of translucent latex rubber for clothing can also be found in fetish clothing. Some materials become transparent when wet.
