Cheruvadi(Small Stick) is one of the famous and beautiful ancient villages in Kozhikode. It was famous for timber, rice and cattle business and exchange, located 25 kilometres east of Calicut.It is also one of the famous and beautiful villages in kozhikode district, surrounded by two rivers namely Chaliyar and Eruvazhinchi puzha. The view of sunset from Thottakuth Kunnu to Kazhayikal kadavu & front of thottakuth tharavadu full of Rice field ending to the two rivers & also the beutifull road going to Chaliyar with one branch to Iruvazhinjipuzha was totally impressed British journalist Sir Norman Foster during 1922 & he proposed to Change CHERUVADI(SMALL STICK) TO CHERUWADI(LITTLE GARDEN)

Name

The name Cheruvadi originates from two words cheriya (small) and vadi (Stick), and Cheruwadi as it says- a small garden which contains all factors of a beautiful village.

Climate

Cheruvadi has a humid and hot climate extending from March to May. The rain starts from June, lasting up to October. The North East Monsoon extends from the second half of October through November. The average annual rainfall is 3313 mm. The best weather is at the end of the year, in December and January, when the sky is clear and the air is crispy. The highest temperature recorded was 39.4 °C in March 1975. The lowest was 14 °C recorded on 26 December 1975. Now the global climate change have affected this small beautiful village too.

People

The centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean gave Kozhikode a cosmopolitan population. Muslims constitute the majority of the population, and next comes the Hindus and then the Christians respectively. The Muslims of Kozhikode District are known as Mappilas. A great majority of them are Sunnis following the Shafi School of thought. People in cheruvadi are very lovable.

Places of interest

The temples and mosques of this village contain sculptures and inscriptions which are of considerable interest to the students of art. Cheruvadi town itself has many mosques, the most notable is the Cheruvadi Puthiyoth Juma Masjid which has got a long history . There are almost 5-6 mosques in Cheruvadi. The main spot for gathering and chating is the Nadakal, where you can experience the pleasantness of the village with chilling breeze. Also there is a shady riverside at Kadavu. Alunghal,Kattapuram and Chullikkaparamba are other popular gathering spots.

Arts and sports

Football is one of the weaknesses of the people of Cheruvadi. There is a mini stadium constructed by the cooperation of natives of the village and the Kodiyathur Panchayath. Other most interested sport is the Shuttle cock, there are many grounds for this purpose. National Athlete C.S Sindhya molChalakandy Razak master and the Singer in Mappila songs C.V.A Kutty , famous mappilappattu lyricist TP Abdulla are the natives of Cheruvadi.

'Kuttiali MasterThe GURU of Cheruwadi was the first Head Master of Govt.U.P School, Cheruvadi. Abdu Cheruvadi (late) was a teacher and a writer. His writings include Travel stories and History. Vagan Tragedy is one of them.Thalavannu Muhammed Musliyar (late) was the Qazhi of Cheruvadi mahallu and now Dr. M Abdul Azeez Faizy., E N Ibrahim Moulavi is a well known Muslim scholar from cheruvadi, he have written a number of books. The first Engineer from Cheruwadi & the only one American Petroleum Institute certified hydro carbon consultant in India & Gulf, Kazhayikal Thottakuth Abdurahiman is residing Kazhayikal Tharavadu,re designed as Nalukettu by the Great artist M.F.Hussain in presence of Vaikom Mohamed Basheer as requested by V.K.Madavan Kutty(Mathrubhumi).Rotarian K.P.U.Ali, Kolakadan Moosa Haji & Journalist Bachu are the legends of Cheruwadi.

Cheruwadi has given birth to many Religious scholars, Polticians, Singers etc.
