Nawapur (Marathi: नवापूर) is a city and a municipal council in Nandurbar district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Geography

Nawapur is located at 19°47′N 72°41′E / 19.78°N 72.68°E / 19.78; 72.68[1]. It has an average elevation of 0 metres (0 feet). Nawapur can be easily reached from Surat by airport or by railway station in Gujrat. It is approx 152 km from Surat on NH6 going to Calcutta. Other than Surat other nearby airports include Indore (250 km), Aurangabad (200 km), and Mumbai (approx. 350 km). It lies on the Surat-Howrah railway line going through Nagpur. For people coming from south Manmad railway station is closest. The state guest house is very well maintained. There are few sugar cooperatives and there is a huge lake/reservoir caused by the dam nearby which provides excellent fresh water fish. The town is known for its pulses and a variety of red chili powder. It was earlier on the Mughal route going to Agra and a few ruins of the Serai and Caravan sentry forts are still surviving. It is a tribal area and many tribals go to Gujrat during the off season to work as labourers in its vast industrial base.

Demographics

As of 2009 India census[2], Nawapur had a population of 69,887. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Nawapur has an average literacy rate of 97%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 92%, and female literacy is 98%. In Nawapur, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
