It was founded (and is currently named after) Sir Hari Singh Gour on 18 July 1946, during the British Raj and is the oldest university in the state.[1]

The main campus of the university is in Sagar City, and the university also has several affiliated colleges and a distance education wing. A medical college is being built in to train students in the field of medical science.
