Manny Alvarez is a Cuban-American OB-GYN who serves as a senior medical contributor for the Fox News Channel and managing health editor of FoxNews.com, appearing on America's Newsroom, Fox & Friends, Fox News Live, America's Pulse, The Live Desk and Fox News Weekend. He also appears as a weekly contributor on WNYW-Fox 5 News and has his own segment on Mega TV news. He is an outspoken opponent of President Barack Obama's attempts to reform the health care system, insisting that this will lead to "socialized medicine" and "the end of private practice".[1]

Biography
Born in Cuba on April 16, 1957, Manuel Alvarez was the oldest son of a middle income, Christian family.[2] He came to the United States during the Cuban Revolution. He was separated from his family as a young boy when he was sent to the United States to live with a foster family through an outreach program while his father was placed in a Cuban prison.[citation needed] After four years, Alvarez was reunited with his family in New York and his father was able to start a business and buy property in Hoboken, New Jersey. Today, Alvarez lives in New Jersey with his wife and three children.
Known widely to audiences as "Dr. Manny," Alvarez was previously a health science reporter for Telemundo and developed a nightly news segment entitled "A Dose of Health." Since 1996, he has been the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Additionally, Alvarez is Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine in New York City.
Joining Fox News Channel in 2005, Alvarez provided his medical expertise during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, regularly being seen on the network explaining what effects the storm had on the people it affected.
Medical background
Dr. Alvarez is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the subspecialty Board of Maternal Fetal Medicine, specializing in the care of high-risk pregnant patients.
After completing his Obstetrics/Gynecology and Anesthesiology residencies at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, Alvarez completed fellowships in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He later held the positions of Associate Professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Vice Chairman, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Alvarez is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM), the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Society of Prenatal Care, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and is an Associate of American Fertility Associates.[citation needed]
He has developed protocols for arterial embolization in pregnancy and co-authored two articles on this procedure. He has also authored numerous publications on various topics in Obstetrics and Gynecology with specific interests in high-risk pregnancy, perinatal ultrasound, and fetal therapy.[citation needed]
Alvarez currently serves as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a Board Member of Life Opportunities Unlimited, a nonprofit organization serving educationally challenged children. In 2004, Alvarez was named Man of the Year by New Jersey SEEDS, an organization that provides students educational scholarships.[citation needed]

Alvarez is the author of The Checklist: What You and Your Family Need to Know to Prevent Disease and Live a Long and Healthy Life, which won two awards in May 2008 for both its Spanish and English editions at the 10th annual International Latino Book Awards in Los Angeles. His most recent book is The Hot Latin Diet: The Fast-Track Plan to a Bombshell Body.
