History
Nantucket High School was founded in 1838 with Cyrus Peirce as the school's first principal.[4]
Athletics
The Nantucket High School athletic teams are known as the Whalers. There is a juvenile Finback Whale skeleton hanging in the commons area of Nantucket High School that serves as the team's mascot. The Nantucket Girls Basketball Team is known as the Lady Whalers.[5]
Every year the Whalers Varsity Football Team plays against the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School Vineyarders for the Island Cup on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Island Cup is played on Nantucket one year then on Martha's Vineyard the next year and continually switches back and forth. The winner keeps the Island Cup trophy until the next year. Currently Martha's Vineyard has the island cup for the ninth straight year, recently beating Nantucket 10-7 on November 19, 2011. The NHS boy's lacrosse team has been in the state tournament consecutively since 1999.[citation needed] The Whalers Ice Hockey Team is also fairly new.
In popular culture
- On the NBC sitcom Wings, the main characters Joe, Brian, Helen, Lowell and Casey were all graduates of the fictional Siasconset High School on Nantucket.[citation needed]
