- United Nations Association of Singapore
The United Nations Association of Singapore (UNAS) was established as a non-governmental organization in 1969 in Singapore. As a voluntary organization, its membership is open to anyone who supports the United Nations and its charter obligations.
Aims
The mission of UNAS is to promote peace, human rights, respect for international law, social progress and better standards of living and freedom. In recent years, the organisation's activities and programmes have been focused increasingly on issues such as protection of the environment and the rights of children, women, older persons and minorities.
Activities
UNAS promotes United Nations' related activities in Singapore, such as organizing conferences and seminars, raising funds and giving awards. The organization aims to promote better understanding of the role and structure of United Nations to the population, especially students. It has closely collaborated in educational events (such as Model United Nations and Young Diplomat Scheme) with many Junior Colleges like Raffles Junior College, Hwa Chong Institution and NUS High School.
Organisation structure
The activities of UNAS are planned and managed by an elected Board of Directors. Members of the Board are eligible for re-election except for the post of Honorary Treasurer. In addition to the Board of Directors, a Board of Advisers made up of personalities in foreign affairs is appointed to strengthen the work of the Association.
