- Eastern Metropolitan Bypass
The Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, or simply E.M. Bypass, is a major road connecting the northern and southern part of the city of
Kolkata ,West Bengal ,India .Starting from the northern hub of
Ultadanga toGaria in the south, the road runs a distance of 21 km along the eastern rim of the city and is one of the most important roads of the metropolis, and can be described as one of its economic lifelines. Plans are currently underway to extend the road to the Falta Export Processing Zone (FEPZ) atFalta on theHooghly River .A number of 'connectors' or connecting roads link the bypass to major hubs all along its route. The most important being the Park Circus connector connecting the locality of
Park Circus to the bypass and the Rash Behari Connector connecting the major business hub of Gariahat to the bypass.The Park Circus Connector meets the bypass at the junction where a Kolkata landmark, the
Science City , is situated. The Rash Behari Connector meets the bypass at the Ruby Hospital. Landmarks and institutions like these dot both the sides of the bypass, and have become the sign of the newly resurgent Kolkata economy.Some of the major landmarks located on this stretch of road are:
* Top-end hotels like theHyatt Regency and theITC Sonar
* Institutions like theWest Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences ,Govt. College of Engineering and Leather Technology and Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute.
* Cultural and social landmarks like theSalt Lake Stadium , Swabhumi, Science City.
* Medical facilities like the Ruby Hospital, Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Peerless Hospital and B.K.Roy Research Centre, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.
* The head office of the Bengali newspaper 'Bartaman ' has also shifted to the E.M.Bypass.
* The first BMW showroom to be opened will be located in Silver Arcade, adjacent to Silver Spring complex, on the Bypass.Apart from all the above, plush residential complexes have also cropped up all along the road like Silver Spring, Avishikta, Udayan, and Hiland Park, which is currently the tallest building of Kolkata.
The road is also the gateway to the IT hub of the city at Sector V, Salt Lake, and the newly developing planned township of
