Pageton is an
unincorporated town in McDowell County,West Virginia . Pageton was located on the Tug Fork Branch of theNorfolk and Western Railway , along the Pocahontas seam of richbituminous coal . Pageton is located on State Route 161 between Thorpe and Anawalt.History
Pageton was named for William Nelson Page (1854-1932) a
civil engineer andindustrialist who lived in Ansted, where he managed manyiron ,coal , andrailroad enterprises. William Page was the first president of The Virginian Railway Company (now a part ofNorfolk Southern ).William N. Page was a principal of the Page Coal and Coke Company, a coal and coking company with another operation in Page in Fayette County. He established the mining operation tipple and coking ovens at Pageton around 1907.
Legacy
Although coal mining activity ended long ago, the
company store of the Page Coal and Coke Company at Pageton survives, and is listed on theNational Register of Historic Places .External links
