Minangkabau International Airport (IATA: PDGICAO: WIPT) is the principal airport serving the province of West Sumatra on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located about 23 km north-west of Padang, in Ketaping, Padang Pariaman regency. The airport became operational in July 2005, replacing the old Tabing Airport in Padang. The airport is named after the Minangkabau ethnic group who inhabit the region. There is one terminal building for both international flights and domestic flights. The airport has 17 check-in counters, 5 baggage conveyors, and 9 ticket sales counters.[3]

There is a plan to lengthen the runway by 250 m to be compatible with Boeing 747 planes, and also to connect the airport to the city of Padang with a train service[4]. The terminal expansion (Phase II) is already announced and the rendering is already released in Angkasa Pura 2 website. [5]

The airport suffered minor damage in an earthquake in September, 2009.

Minangkabau International Airport is located 23 km from the center of the city of Padang, occupying an area of ± 427 hectares as the main gate of West Sumatra. The airport was built in 2001 replacing Tabing Airport which has been operating for 34 years. The transfer Tabing Airport to Minangkabau International Airport because it no longer meets the requirements in terms of flight safety. New airport construction is spent approximately 9.4 billion yen which is a soft loan from Japan Bank International Corporation (JICB) and the state budget of around Rp 97.6 billion (10% of it) involves the contractor Shimizu and Marubeni of Japan JO and Adhi Karya from Indonesia.

The number of flights serving the routes from and to Minangkabau International Airport as the Airport Tabing connecting Padang to Jakarta, Medan, Batam and Pekanbaru for domestic, whereas for air transportation services to overseas (international), namely Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Until now, there were ten national airlines and two foreign airlines operating in Minangkabau International Airport. Minangkabau International Airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft like Airbus A330 or MD 11 and completeness of the facility that much different from Tabing Airport flights to more exciting activities at this airport.

Minangkabau International Airport is the second airport after Soekarno-Hatta Airport Cengkareng to be constructed from the beginning. A master plan (master plan), this airport will be built in three phases, phase two will begin in 2010. when all phases have been completed long runway Minangkabau International Airport will grow up to 3,600 m which is equipped with a parallel taxiway along with the construction of other supporting facilities, such as passenger terminal building. Given current conditions, the number of passengers who have reached 1.3 million per year, already more than double the planned first, targeting 622,000 passengers per year to be met by 2010. Minangkabau International Airport should be developed as soon as possible in order to accommodate an increasing number of passengers and goods in the future, so the comfort and satisfaction of service users can be achieved.

Along with the development of the airport, the local government to build a bridge overpass (fly over) at the intersection of the entrance to the airport, which until now has not completed the process, as well as road widening Tabing - Duku along 10 km located on the road Padang - Bukit Tinggi.

Airlines and destinations

The following destinations are served from the airport (as of Oct 2011):

Airlines Destinations
AirAsia Kuala Lumpur
Batavia Air Batam, Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta
Garuda Indonesia Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta
Lion Air Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta, Medan, Batam
Susi Air Bengkulu
Sriwijaya Air Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta, Batam
Nusantara Buana Air Sipora-Rokot

The facilities are adequate for a regional provincial airport. There is ample parking space, a range of stores selling various goods (especially provincial products), and check-in arrangements are generally quite efficient. However the departure lounge can get quite crowded at times and indeed crowding seems likely to become more of a problem in view of the rapid growth in passenger numbers taking place at present (2011) in Indonesia. Many international tourists would find the toilet facilities somewhat unsatisfactory.

Accidents and incidents

Minangkabau International Airport has no records of any accidents or incidents at all.
