History

Neshkoro was founded in 1848.[4] It was platted by a woman, Helen Maria White, with the help of her brother, Ebenezer Dakin. The two had traveled there from New York state and were the first known white settlers. They made their campsite at the spot where St. James Catholic Church was built in the later 1880s. This area, along the banks of the White River, had been an Indian reservation and was then considered Indian land.

According to old histories written for school assignments, White and Dakin built a two-room log cabin with an attic loft. It is unknown what ultimately happened to the two, but it is suspected[by whom?] they moved further west as the area became more populated. Many Scottish and Irish people moved into the area around 1855.

The present village of Neshkoro was platted in 1852 by White and Dakin's two additions to the plat added three years earlier. The Neshkoro Plat of 1852 shows Bluff, Park, Pearl, and Berlin Streets; church lots No. 1 and No. 2; a school lot; a public square; and building lots. The new community was first called Dakinsville for Ebenezer. It was also at one time called "Whiskey Corners" for the number of stills in the area, as there were no restraining laws.
