Sherburne is a village in Chenango County, New York, USA. The population was 1,455 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Sherburne is in the Town of Sherburne, north of the City of Norwich.

History

The first settlement of the Town of Sherburne took place near the village around 1792. The Village of Sherburne was incorporated in 1830.

Geography

Sherburne is located at coor dms|42|40|45|N|75|29|51|W|city (42.679302, -75.497518)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

The Chenango River passes along the west side of the village.

The intersection of Route 12 (North and South Main Stree) and NY-80 is in the village.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,455 people, 648 households, and 351 families residing in the village. The population density was 956.9 people per square mile (369.6/km²). There were 700 housing units at an average density of 460.4/sq mi (177.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.76% White, 0.48% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.03% of the population.

There were 648 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.4% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.7% were non-families. 40.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $28,676, and the median income for a family was $39,844. Males had a median income of $31,080 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,248. About 13.3% of families and 18.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.3% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.
