Amesbury CDP is a census-designated place comprising the main urban portions of the City of Amesbury, Massachusetts in Essex County.

Those details reported here are also included in the aggregate values reported for the entire city; as of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 12,327.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are:

There are 4,910 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 37.0% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $50,037, and the median income for a family is $59,853. Males have a median income of $41,566 versus $31,209 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,657. 7.0% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.7% are under the age of 18 and 10.3% are 65 or older.
