History
Croydon Station was originally opened as Five Dock Station in 1875,[2] but its name was changed to Croydon in August, 1876.[3] The Main Suburban Railway Line through Croydon was quadruplicated in 1892,[4] and sextuplicated in 1927 in association with electrification works.[5]
A pedestrian subway was built at the eastern end of the station in 1892 when the adjacent level crossing was closed.[6] This subway was closed after 1980.
The 'up main' line had a platform (originally platform 1) until 1927 when it was removed.[6] Remnants still remain of the footbridge and stairs leading up to it.
Platforms and services
The station has six tracks passing through it, though only five platforms.
The station is served by two to four trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.
