They are the top school in Newport News in terms of the number of students taking AP exams, and have the highest rate of passing.[2] In 2008, Menchville High School was rated as the 487th best public high school in the nation according to Newsweek Magazine.[3]

The school colors are purple and gold, and the school's mascot is a Lion. Menchville's sports teams are consistently given the Julian Rice Trophy for best collective sports team in Newport News[citation needed]. The school's boys and girls athletic teams are known as the Monarchs and Lady Monarchs, respectively.
