Hickory, Virginia ) is a high school inChesapeake, Virginia . There are approximately 2,100 students. The school's mascot is a hawk and the school colors are teal, grey, white, and black.Due to the overwhelming amount of students, a new school,
Grassfield High School , has been built nearby.The school's band program is one of the highest bands in the state. It has been selected a Virginia State Honor's Band for several years running(Honors Band- The school's marching and top concert band must receive grade 1 a.k.a superior in state festivals). The band program is under the direction of conductors David Enloe and Matt Phillips. The marching band has won top awards at competitions held at venues such as
Giants Stadium in New Jersey andM&T Bank Stadium in Maryland. Also, in the performing arts division of the school, are the highly accomplished orchestra and chorus programs. Both of which performing in lots of stuff like Disney World, Central Park, and Carnegie Hall.On June 9th of 2006, an outbreak of
whooping cough in the school made it to local news. Each student was given a letter to inform his or her parents. The infected student came into contact with many of his/her peers within the period of being infected, so these students were given an additional letter to give to their parents. [ [http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=5809846 Chesapeake Schools confirm case of Whooping Cough in high school] ]The 2007-2008 Scholastic Bowl Team recently won the titles of Southeastern District Champions and Southeastern District Season Champions and Eastern Region Champions, and finished the season with a 21-3 record, coming in third place in the 2008 state championship. The team is coached by Mrs. Ford and Mr. Morgan.The 2008-2009 Scholastic Bowl Team kicked off the new season with a 280 to 120 win against Oscar Smith on October 1st. The fact that Oscar Smith hosts the local IB program did nothing to help their chances against the Fantastic Hickory Hawks.
On June 7th, 2008, the Lady Hawks Softball team defeated
Battlefield High School 4-2 to win the Virginia State Softball Championship. The first state championship in the school's history.On October 3rd, 2008, Hickory's Football Team beat Grassfield High School, who at the time was ranked tenth in the region. This win was the first under the new direction of Coach Sitterson.
