Massasoit Community College was founded in 1966, and named for Massasoit, the Great Sachem of the Wampanoag. Massasoit Community College offers associate degree programs in arts, sciences, and applied sciences, and one-year and short-term certificates for a range of occupations and interests. Corporate and job skills training courses, personal enrichment classes, theater and concert performances, and programs for high school students, younger children, and seniors are among the other offerings available to the residents of Southeastern Massachusetts.

The Student Body

Massasoit is one of the largest of the 15 community colleges within the Massachusetts Public Higher Education system. In Fall 2008, there were 7,394 students (4,526 FTEs) enrolled for credit: 6,113 in Brockton and 1,281 in Canton.

Over 4,600 students annually enroll in non-credit community education or workforce development courses.

Programs of Study

Massasoit offers associate degree programs in 18 majors, including occupation-specific programs and liberal arts.

• Certificate programs include Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Office Technologies (certified by the Board of Higher Education) and more than two dozen short-term certificates, including Child Care, Computer Repair, Computerized Accounting, MRI, Office Skills, Phlebotomy, and Publishing.
• Students choose among options in Business Administration, CIS, Liberal Arts, and Visual Arts. They also have the option of selecting programs that facilitate transfer to a four-year college.
• All occupation-specific programs have an employer advisory committee to keep the program relevant and up to industry standards.
• Courses are offered during the day, evening, and through Weekend College. Distance education courses are offered completely online or as hybrid courses where some on-site attendance is required.
• There is an articulation agreement to earn a bachelor's degree from the Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts.^[1]

• Tuition and fees for a full-time student (12 credits, or 4 classes) per semester: $1,644.00 ($137.00 per credit)
• Books per semester for full-time student (12 credits, or 4 classes): $800 to $1000.

Campuses

Massasoit Community College has two campuses located in Brockton, Canton, and Middleboro with modern classroom facilities, laboratories, and computer centers.

The Brockton campus is a 100-acre (0.40 km²) facility, which began construction in 1969 and completed in 1978, with a number of modern academic buildings, a student center, library, day care, two theaters, radio and TV studios, and a field house which houses a swimming pool, basketball court, racquetball courts and weight room. The Conference Center at Massasoit is adjacent to this campus and is available for meetings and functions.

The Canton campus is a multi-level facility on 18 acres (73,000 m²) in the Blue Hills area south of Boston. Specialized labs, art studios, and CAD and Macintosh computer labs support the technical and visual arts programs on campus. The campus is home to the Milton Art Museum, Akillian Gallery, and the College’s Professional Development Center. The building was formerly a technical high school, acquired by the college in 1985.

Athletics

Massasoit is a member of the NJCAA, in which it has won three national titles: Men's Division II Baseball (1993) and Men's Soccer (1986 and 1987). The college currently offers varsity sports in women's and men's soccer, women's and men's basketball, softball, and baseball. In the past, it has also offered hockey, golf, tennis, and women's volleyball programs.

Faculty & Staff

• There are currently 124 full-time faculty and 354 part-time faculty.
• There are 239 full-time administrators, professionals, clerical and maintenance workers, and 317 part-time staff.

Notable alumni

• Christine E. Canavan (A.S. 1983), member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1993–present)
• Jim Craig, member of the "Miracle on Ice" USA Hockey team in the 1980 Winter Olympics, and NHL player from 1979 to 1984. Transferred to Boston University after his freshman year.
• Jim Mann, Major League Baseball player, 2000–2003
• John Murphy, assistant coach of the Major League Soccer teams New England Revolution, Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids
