The New Zealand general election of 1881 was held 9 December to elect a total of 95 MPs to the 8th session of the New Zealand Parliament. The Māori vote was held on 8 December. A total number of 120,972 (66.5%) voters turned out to vote.[1]
1881 was the year first general election held under universal male suffrage; all MPs elected in single-member electorates; introduction of country quota allowing rural electorates to have 25% fewer voters than urban electorates; European and Māori seats' elections were held on single (but different) days.
