Manufacturer Opel Also called Vauxhall Astramax Production 1986-1994 Successor Opel Combo Class Panel van Related Opel Kadett The Opel Kadett Combo was a small panel van based on the Opel Kadett E. It was introduced in January 1986 and finished production in the summer of 1994. The British Version of this van was known as the Bedford/Vauxhall Astramax. The van was a popular choice with electricians, plumbers and gardeners. It was then replaced with the Opel Astravan and a new Opel Combo based on the Corsa B.
The Opel Kadett Combo has sometimes been seen as a Grey Import, however it is not as popular as the Vauxhall Astramax. It was actually never officially sold in the UK and by 1989 General Motors Europe was only selling Opel Cars and Vans in the UK as Vauxhalls.
Vauxhall Astramax
The Bedford/Vauxhall Astramax (Opel Kadett Combo in mainland Europe) was a panel van based on the Vauxhall Astra (Opel Kadett). It was a very popular choice with drivers and on the television show Lovejoy it was used as a Minor Action Vehicle. When the van was introduced, it was called the Bedford Astramax. It was not until some years later it was called the Vauxhall Astramax when GM decided to scrap the Bedford Badge and rebadge them as Vauxhalls.
Sales in the UK were strong right until the end, but by the time the last Astramax was made in the 1990s, it was looking very dated compared to new rivals such as the Peugeot Partner and Renault Kangoo. Its successor was the Astravan and Combo, one of the first vans to adopt the Opel name. By 2002 ,all Vauxhall and Opel vehicles had the same names.
