Old Brethren German Baptist

Old Brethren German Baptist

The Old Brethren German Baptists are a group of Schwarzenau Brethren that split off from the Old German Baptist Brethren (OGBB) in 1939, and differ from them by stricter adherence to traditions, such as the use of horse and buggy, rather than automobiles, as a means of transportation. There are about 130 members, including a group near Camden, Indiana, and a newer group in Missouri. The majority of the members of the newer group in Trenton, Missouri are converts from the car driving Old German Baptist Brethren group, who withdrew over concerns over a perceived slide to modernity in that group.

They are distinct from the Old Order German Baptist Brethren, another group with similar traditions that split off from the OGBB in 1921. The Old Brethren German Baptists farm with horses, while the Old Order German Baptists use tractors and other motorized equipment in their farming.
