- OPA! Day
-
OPA! Day is an annual holiday celebration taking place on the 15th of September. It is a secular celebration of Greek culture. The concept was invented by Dr. Elaine Dundon, co-founder of The OPA Way!®, a philosophy of living a "happy, healthy, meaningful life" inspired by and based on Greek culture—from ancient times to the present-day. The first official OPA! Day celebration will take place in Rethymno, Crete, Greece, on September 15, 2010, at the Aegean Pearl Hotel. The Mayor of Rethymno has been asked to proclaim September 15 as "OPA! Day" and the event will be attended by other dignitaries, international guests, members of the local Greek community, and the media.
OPA! Day is designated as an occasion to celebrate Greek culture and the timeless contributions that Greece and Greeks have made to the world: in Architecture, Art, Astronomy, Athletics, Biology, Democracy, Drama, Food/Diet, Language, Literature, Mathematics, Medicine, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Science, Theater, and many more. The Day includes celebrations with Greek food, drink, dancing, and wearing something of the color blue, a Greek national color. Beginning in 2011, OPA! Day will be celebrated around the world.
